We need your help!

New Music by Marquis Hill

As a small, musician-led nonprofit, FONT Music needs your help to bring new music by Marquis to the 2016 Festival for New Trumpet Music. Help us fund the 2016 Roy Campbell, Jr. Commission and support the creation of new music by Marquis Hill. The 2016 Festival will run from September 19 to September 25. The performance of the new piece by Marquis Hill will be presented at Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center on September 21 and 22nd.

Marquis Hill, 29-year-old trumpeter and composer, Chicago native, and winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition, was a highlight of the 2015 Festival of New Trumpet Music performing with a band he put together called Signatures in Brass. Six trumpet players – Marquis joined by Phillip Dizack, Keyon Harrold, Billy Buss, Josh Evans and Ingrid Jensen – and a rhythm section blew the roof off of the Jazz Gallery. The group made such an impact that they have been invited to return for the 2016 Festival. This year Marquis brings the group to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club for two shows, co-sponsored by the Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT Music) and Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC).

To make Marquis’ 2016 appearance extra special, FONT Music has commissioned him to write new music specifically for the occasion to be premiered at the 2016 Festival. FONT Music established the Roy Campbell, Jr. Commissioning Project in 2014, honoring the organization’s co-founder who died that year. Each year FONT Music recognizes a trumpeter, composer, and/or bandleader by awarding a commission for a new composition to be performed at the Festival. Marquis is the honoree for 2016.

Marquis is a perfect choice to represent the Festival of New Trumpet Music’s mission to celebrate opportunity, encourage diversity, and enable community for and among trumpet players and those with whom they work.  Not only is Marquis a vital, exciting player who brings originality and freshness to the music, his composing and leadership integrate a range of styles and players greater than the sum of the parts. A new piece by Marquis will provide a fitting tribute to the commission’s namesake, Roy Campbell, Jr., and is sure to add memorable new music to the repertoire.

Please join us in making this happen!

FONT Music Interview: Shane Endsley

Trumpeter/Composer, Shane Endsley

By Thomas Bergeron, April 2016 – «When I was in college, a friend of mine played me a recording of Shane Endsley‘s composition Snake Pit from his debut album 2nd Guess. It was one of those addictive head-boppers for me, and at that time it was probably the coolest thing I had ever heard a trumpet player do. It wasn’t just the virtuosic trumpet playing that struck me. The structure of the compositions on that album were like nothing I had heard before. Like many of us trumpeters, Shane’s artistry became the doorway through which I was led to the mind-blowing world of Kneebody.»
