Dennis Gonzalez’s Spirit Meridian with Dennis Gonzalez, Oliver Lake, Michael “T.A.” Thompson and Ken Filiano. After playing together in Texas twelve years ago, Gonzalez, who has played with jazz legends from Charles Brackeen to Malachi Favors and beyond, asked seminal saxophonist Oliver Lake to join his NY Quartet in Europe this past March. Now they play together in Spirit Meridian, in what will be the first in a continuing series of collaborations between the two leaders.

nmperign with Greg Kelley and Bhob Rainey . Since the late 1990s, the unlikely trumpet/soprano saxophone duo nmperign has adeptly sidestepped the novelty of extended techniques, the illusions of “free” improvisation, and the trappings of the “new,” defining and redefining a particularly idiosyncratic sound world. In the process, they have released a number of recordings, travelled far and wide, and collaborated with musicians and artists from the variously defined and undefined strata of noise, experimental, and contemporary classical musics.

Devilish trumpeter John McNeil, teacher to many of today’s trumpet greats, recorded and toured with Horace Silver, Bob Berg, Dave Liebman, Richie Beirach and others. He has now re-emerged as an important composer and bandleader with a string of astonishing new recordings. This concert celebrates the release of Mr. McNeil’s new recording on Omnitone, Sleep Won’t Come.

Stephen Haynes and Bugaboo , with Stephen Haynes, Allan Jaffe, Mario Pavone and Satoshi Takeishi. Bugaboo was convened by improvising composer Stephen Haynes in order to further develop his compositional language within a rhythm-based small group context. Selections from the American Songbook (e.g. Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Johnny Cash) will also be explored. Stephen Haynes has worked with a wide range of composers including George Russell, La Monte Young, Leroy Jenkins and Rhys Chatham and is currently a member of Cecil Taylor’s Orchestra Humane (Ubuntu).

Taylor Ho Bynum Trio with Joe Daley on tuba, and Tomas Fujiwara on drums Cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum (best known for his work with Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and the Fully Celebrated Orchestra) brings in a new trio featuring tuba virtuoso Joseph Daley (Charlie Haden, Sam Rivers, Taj Mahal, etc) and drummer Tomas Fujiwara (of Stomp). Ted Daniel and the International Brass and Membrane Corporation – IBMC with Charles Burnham, Jose Davila, and Newman Baker. Mr. Daniel, who began his career with Sonny Sharrock, went on to perform seminal works with Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Sunny Muuray, and Henry Threadgill. IBMC, his current ensemble, was conceived as a flexible and expandable creative music performance group. The Corporation will be performing new works by Mr. Daniel.

Bill Dixon with Dominic Duval, Tony Widoff, and Warren Smith. The Festival of New Trumpet Music is proud to present Bill Dixon, organizer and producer of the October Revolution in Jazz in New York City in 1964, architect of the Jazz Composers’ Guild (for the performance of contemporary American Black Music) in New York City in 1964, and founder of the Black Music Division of Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont in 1973. Mr. Dixon was Professor of Music at Bennington from 1968-96, this is his first New York performance in many years.
