Wow! In some ways it’s easy to knock Don Cherry, because his playing is so ‘unpolished’, but especially after watching him perform, I’m more sure than ever that we could all learn a thing or two about the values of tarnish. He is so expressive–Stevie Wonder comes to mind–I can’t help but wonder if he just was brave enough to see through all of the technical elements to a more purely emotive method. In a world where world music is unfortunately being distilled down to ‘ethnic’ (where on the map is Ethnos?), he clearly gets it: say what you have to say, in any language you can speak.
