Trompettiste au jeu éclatant qui mélange mélodies angulaires et sons de souffle, Jake Henry fait partie de la nouvelle génération d’improvisateurs et de compositeurs de New York. Ses compositions complexes allient le jeu mélodique et les techniques non conventionnelles. Musicien actif sur la nouvelle scène du jazz et de la musique d’avant-garde de Brooklyn, Jake est né à Toronto (Ontario) où il a étudié la guitare et la trompette à l’école secondaire, avant de se consacrer uniquement à la trompette en 2003. Détenteur d’un baccalauréat en musique de l’Université McGill (Montréal) et d’une maîtrise du City College of New York CUNY, Jake a fréquenté l’atelier de jazz et de musique créative au Banff Centre for the Performing Arts à deux reprises (2006 et 2010) sous la direction de Dave Douglas. Il a étudié avec Tony Malaby, John Patitucci, Ralph Alessi, Laurie Frink, Brian Sand, Bill Mahar, Chris McCann et Lorne Lofsky. Jake se produit régulièrement à New York, aux États-Unis et au Canada, notamment avec son trio Sweet Talk (avec Dustin Carlson et Devin Drobka), un duo avec le virtuose de la basse préparée Sean Ali, et plusieurs autres ensembles de musique improvisée et écrite. Il s’est également produit et a enregistré avec de nombreux musiciens reconnus de différentes disciplines. Son premier album, Glitterbomb (avec Sweet Talk) est paru sur Prom Night Records en avril 2013.

Trumpet player Jake Henry is a part of a new generation of New York improvisers and composers. He plays with fire; his angular melodies combining with fast burs of air. Henry artfully blends free melody and extended techniques with complexly beautiful composition. Jake is an active player in Brooklyn’s young jazz and avantgarde scenes. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, learning to play both guitar and trumpet in high school before ultimately switching to the trumpet in 2003. Jake holds a B.Mus. from McGill University in Montreal and an M.A. from the City College of New York CUNY in New York City. He is an alumni of Dave Douglas’ workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, having attended twice, in 2006 and 2010. He has studied primarily with Tony Malaby, John Patitucci, Ralph Alessi, Laurie Frink, Brian Sand, Bill Mahar, Chris McCann and Lorne Lofsky. Jake performs regularly in New York City and around the USA and Canada with his trio Sweet Talk (with Dustin Carlson and Devin Drobka), his duo with prepared bass virtuoso Sean Ali and various other ensembles, both improvised and composed. He has performed and recorded with award winning musicians across many disciplines. His debut album with Sweet Talk, “Glitterbomb” was released on Prom Night Records in April 2013.

Fondé par le trompettiste/compositeur Bill Mahar et la saxophoniste et chef d’orchestre Jennifer Bell, Altsys Jazz Orchestra se spécialise dans les compositions canadiennes et les œuvres rarement interprétée de la tradition big band. Altsys sert comme véhicule pour Bill Mahar qui a créé de nombreuses compositions pour l’orchestre. Altsys a collaboré avec, entre autres; Kenny Wheeler, Ray Anderson, Hugh Fraser, Don Thompson, Donny McCaslin Pat LaBarbera, Seamus Blake, Mike Murley, Tim Hagans, John Warren et Maria Schneider (Prix Opus 1998). L’orchestre s’est produit plusieurs fois au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, d’autres festivals de jazz canadiens et au congress du International Association of Jazz Educators. Altsys a gravé trois disques compacts et a fait plusieurs émissions de radio et télévision pour la SRC / CBC et BRAVO!

La prestation FONT Canada mettra en vedette les trompettistes de l’orchestre et rendra hommage au compositeur et trompettiste regretté Kenny Wheeler.

Founded by trumpeter/composer Bill Mahar and conductor/saxophonist Jennifer Bell, Altsys Jazz Orchestra specializes in Canadian compositions and infrequently performed works from the jazz orchestra tradition. Altsys serves as a vehicle for Bill Mahar who has premiered numerous compositions with the orchestra. Altsys has collaborated with, among others; Kenny Wheeler, Ray Anderson, Hugh Fraser, Don Thompson, Donny McCaslin Pat LaBarbera, Seamus Blake, Mike Murley, Tim Hagans, John Warren and Maria Schneider (Prix Opus 1998). The orchestra has performed multiple times at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, other canadian jazz festivals and the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention. Altsys released 3 compact discs as well as radio shows for CBC/SRC and television for BRAVO!

The FONT Canada performance will feature the orchestra’s trumpet players as well as pay tribute de the late Kenny Wheeler.
